Why PORTOLAN – in the middle of the mainland?

In former times, for people without current nautical charts it was impossible to calculate reliable courses through the sea. Thus, wind and streaming conditions were indicated wrong. Then, they navigated not into the save port but to unknown water.
No land was in sight at all; only high waves, driftage and distress appeared.

PORTOLAN’s people are no sailors.
There is no crest of waves around us but we are surrounded with a sea of grape-wines. At the place where wine is growing people are living that are thinkers (Theodor Heuss) and lateral thinkers too, inventors and people that don't stop just because they think they have achieved the goal. There are living people that have visions and which are thinking of the future.

And that's exactly why we feel common with the sailors. The sailors looked from the crow’s nest for new horizons and for new land whereby the captains were dependent on having available the best sea charts, the so-named PORTOLAN atlases, which allowed them to practice trade and commerce successfully by preventing risks. We are sailing close to the wind but we are on a secure way.
